Peugeot 1.2 PureTech Wet Timing Belt Replacement

The Peugeot PSA 1.2 Puretech engine has a wet timing belt instead of a traditional timing belt. This engine has been fitted to several Peugeot models including:

Peugeot 108

Peugeot 208

Peugeot 2008

Peugeot 3013

Peugeot 308 II

Peugeot 408 II

The traditional timing belt runs on the outside of the engine but the Puretech wet belt runs submerged in oil inside the engine.

Peugeot recommends that the wet belts are replaced every 6 years or 60,000 miles.

On some vehicles, due to lack of servicing, poor maintenance or the use of incorrect oils many of these belts fail prior to the suggested replacement interval so we suggest a replacement at about 5 years or 50,000 miles to be sure, maybe even before if you don’t know the full history of your vehicle. If the belt fails there is a high chance that a replacement engine will be required.

Proper maintenance is essential to preserving the life of these belts, and if you are unsure of the car's history it may be worth having the belt changed early for peace of mind.

Use of the correct specification oils is essential on these cars, and we have noticed that vehicles that we have cared for from new often have a much lower quantity of debris in the oil strainer. Replacement of the wet belt is a time-consuming task and must be done in a clean and organised workshop environment.  To access the wet camshaft timing belt and oil pump drive belt, the timing cover, camshaft cover and sump must be removed. The oil strainer is checked for debris and cleaned as required. The engine is then rebuilt with new, genuine parts and refilled with the correct specification of oil. The vehicle is always road tested pre and post repair and will receive a free safety inspection before work commences.

We replace the following components:

  • Replace timing belt window gasket

  • Replace crank pulley bolt,

  • Replace crank pulley seal,

  • Remove rocker covers with specialist locking tool

  • Replace rocket cover gasket.

  • Carry out a Oil and Filter change.

Catching problems early allows the belt to be replaced before complete failure and extensive engine repairs become necessary.
